MasterCard adds monthly $10 Doordash credit and more changes for World and World Elite cardholders

MasterCard has just updated their benefits for their World and World Elite cardholders to include up to $10 monthly credit for Doordash DashPass orders and 5% off HelloFresh.  Let's take a look at the changes, which could be a mixed bag for some and an improvement for others.

New: Doordash DassPass monthly credits

Both World and World Elite MasterCard holders will now be getting $5 off each of their first 2 Doordash DashPass orders every month through September 30, 2022.  In addition, carholders who are new to DashPass now get 3 free months of DashPass, which is Doordash's paid subscription that gets you reduced service fees, 5% credit on pickup orders, and free delivery on orders $12+.

One of the potential downsides of this benefit is that you must use your World Elite MasterCard in order to be eligible for the $5 off.  For many who already get free DashPass via their Chase Sapphire cards, DashPass benefits only kick in if you're using your associated Chase Sapphire cards, which are Visa cards without this benefit.  However, if you activate your free 3-month DashPass membership with your Chase Freedom Flex card, you'd be eligible for the $5 off since the Freedom Flex is a World Elite MasterCard.

New: 5% off on HelloFresh orders

HellFresh is a meal kit delivery service similar to Sun Basket and Blue Apron.  Both MasterCard World and World Elite cardholders will get 5% off each meal box they purchase.  This will be in addition to whatever cashback your World MasterCard already earns.

Change: $5 Lyft credit after taking 3 rides in a calendar month

Formerly, World Elite cardholders got a $10 Lyft credit after taking 5 rides in a calendar month.  But that requirement has now been reduced to 3, though the credit has been reduced to $5.  That may or may not be better for some depending on the frequency of their Lyft usage.  As a reminder, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders, which are Visa Infinite cards, get 10x UR on Lyft rides, so using your World Elite Mastercard may not always be the best option depending on the bonus earnings potential.  Chase Freedom Flex cards do earn 5x UR on Lyft rides and still get the $5 credit after 3 rides, so the Freedom Flex could be a good option for pay for Lyft rides.

Change: $5 reward for spending $20+ at Fandango

Formerly, World Elite cardholders earned double Fandango VIP+ points for the movie ticket purchases. This means cardholders will get 500 Fandango VIP+ points (worth $5) for every two movie tickets they purchase via the Fandango app or Fandango.com.  The VIP+ points can be used towards purchasing movie tickets on Fandango or towards streaming movies and TV shows on FandangoNOW.  I wouldn't necessarily call this an improvement since you generally need to buy at least 2 movie tickets anyway to spend $20+ on Fandango.  And 2 matinee tickets, which generally come out to under $20 total, will no longer earn $5 worth in rewards.

Negative changes: Boxed and Onfinestay partnerships ending

Formerly, World Elite cardholders would earn 5% Cash Rewards on their Boxed purchases, which can be used towards future purchases on Boxed.  Cardholders also saved 10% on rental homes through Onefinestay.  As of April 1, 2021, these benefit has now been discontinued.

Existing benefits remaining the same

All of the other existing benefits for World Elite MasterCard holders will remain the same, including cell phone protection and free Shoprunner membership.  As a reminder, ShopRunner normally costs $79 a year and gets you free 2-day shipping and free returns at 100+ stores and exclusive offers on thousands of brands.  ShopRunner is also free for American Express cardholders.  Cell phone protection reimburses you up to $800 ($50 deductible) for accidental damage or theft of your cell phone as long as your monthly bill is charged to your World Elite MasterCard.

Bottom line

Though not all of these changes are improvements, World and World Elite MasterCard holders may find some additional value with these benefits, particularly with the monthly Doordash credit.  Amongst credit card issuers, MasterCard definitely comes out on top in terms of the complimentary benefits to their World Elite cardholders.  And many World Elite MasterCards, such as the Chase Freedom Flex, don't have annual fees, which make them good cards to have around for the long run.
